Professional Training Why?
Professional Training:
As Mindfulness Based Approaches to health and wellbeing are increasingly being recognised as an effective method for treating many mental and physical health difficulties, the Mental Health Foundation has recommend that mindfulness based approaches should be taught to clinicians and other health professionals early on in their training as part of their continual professional development. As currently, 57% of GP's think that offering mindfulness practices to their clients would be beneficial, but the majority of them say that they do not have access to trained providers of mindfulness based courses.
One of the major requirements for making mindfulness based approaches more accessible is to train more clinicians and healthcare professional in delivering such programmes. It has been found that mindfulness can only be transmitted by teachers who have a mindfulness practice themselves. Mindfulness cannot be taught from a book or by a teacher who does not engage in mindfulness practice themselves, inexperienced teachers are liable to be ineffective. Therefore it is crucial that people teaching others mindfulness practice have considerable experiential as well as theoretical training in this field.
The Mental Health Foundation has also called for the expansion of MBCT training and services to meet the NICE recommendation, stating that this should be driven by the Department of Health’s Improving Access to Psychological Therapy (IAPT) programme. In addition, it states that Primary Care Trust commissioners should consider how they can best build the capacity of Mindfulness services within their localities, using trained staff from statutory, independent and voluntary sector providers.
Mindflow offers healthcare professionals comprehensive training in mindfulness and compassion based approaches. It also provides mindfulness and compassion programmes for specific client bases and is happy to receive referrals from GP's.
